Geoscape - Surface Cover - Greater Melbourne (Raster) December 2020

This dataset presents Geoscape Surface Cover encompassing the spatial coverage of the Greater Melbourne (2GMEL) Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA) as defined by the 2016 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). This dataset contains the December 2020 data release.

Geoscape data is created by Geoscape Australia. It is consistently formatted spatial data that describes the buildings, addresses, land and transport networks across Australia’s complex cities, regional centres and rural communities.

The Surface Cover theme consists of two layers: (1) Surface Cover 2M and (2) Surface Cover 30M. The theme consists of a digital pixel representation of the different types of ground cover of Australia. Each layer represents a pixel resolution: Surface Cover 2M represents ground cover within areas classified as urban at a two-metre resolution, and Surface Cover 30M represents ground cover at a thirty-metre resolution, nationally.

The purpose of Surface Cover is to spatially represent different types of land cover for use by industry and government in geographic information systems and/or other information systems.

AURIN has split the 2M rasters into GCCSAs based on raster intersection, each raster is assigned to the GCCSA with which it has the largest overlap. The 30M rasters have been split into the convex hulls of each GCCSA. Both operations are based the 2016 ASGS.
